You know what can make your day suck more than hormones? When you find out that the 19-year-old who keeps skipping class and who you've decided is lazy and unmotivated is tired for a reason.
You guessed it!
She's pregnant!
And, since this class has a lab associated with it, she (rightfully so) had to tell me really early on so we make sure she isn't exposed to anything bad for her baby (it's killing me to write "her baby"). So, of course, I have to hear it while she still is in the "OMG what have I done?" phase.
I had to listen to her cry in my office about being pregnant.
You've GOT to be kidding me.
I'm sorry, the only person who gets to cry in my office about pregnancies is me.
I told her congratulations. I'm pretty sure that's not what she wanted to hear. I don't give a crap.
That must have been awkward and depressing!
ReplyDeleteBut try not to be too hard on her. Most of us would panic too at her age. This is a good oportunity to practice your future parenting skills - I'm pretty sure there'll be plenty of times you'll have to keep your own feelings in check, specially with teenagers!
After I showed my doc the azoospermia result, we had a talk about IF in general and she mentioned that plenty of healthy, happy, financially stable couples come into her office asking for a termination and, considering she's a fertility expert, it upset her.
Until very recently, termination was a crime in our country unless you were a rape victim or your life was in danger. You could be thrown in jail for it. I gently mentioned to the doc that, even now, forcing a pregnancy is an act of violence as abhorrent to me as forcing a termination.
All this to say that we can't let IF rob us of perspective and empathy for others.
I hope this didn't sound like a lecture. Having said all that, I completely understand the urge to slap her across the face and order her to be grateful!
And whenever you need to cry, imagine us right there with you, giving you a big hug.
I so wish you to be a mom soon!
((hugs))
Ughhhh, that SUCKS!! I'm so glad I don't have to deal with any of this kind of thing at my work - that would be so hard. hang in there!
ReplyDeleteUgh, that sucks so bad! I can't believe you had to sit through that. You are a trooper. (((hugs)))
ReplyDeleteUgghhh is right, damn that would be tough! She could still be lazy and pregnant, tell her to suck it up, she's only 19!
ReplyDeleteOMG, that sucks!!! {{{HUGS}}}
ReplyDeleteHi, just started reading your blog. Wow that's tough!!! We went to a funeral last week and there was a girl that was 16 and she was also pregnant! Ughhhh it's so frustrating when you are trying soooooo hard and this girls just get pregnant like nothing. Good luck I hope you have a better day =)
ReplyDeleteUghhh((( I am sorry you had to deal with this. Big (((HUS)))
ReplyDeleteOMG! I can't believe this happened to you. I'm so sorry! (((HUGS)))
ReplyDeleteBoooo. If she comes back to cry in your office, maybe you can refer her to another teacher? Because that could get old quick.
ReplyDeleteThat is so hard. I have a hard enough time dealing with the all of the pregnancy announcements in my life and they're all planned and wanted. I'm sorry you have to go through that. Seems like a sick joke, doesn't it?
ReplyDeleteOh, that would be so hard.
ReplyDeleteHugs!
I just want to give you BIG HUGS!!!
ReplyDeleteomg, *hugs* to you. i woulda kicked her out of my office and pulled her hair, just for good measure.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry, sometimes life just kicks you in the ovaries doesn't it.... (((HUGS)))
